I am someone who knows my culture and my roots. I believe that our roots, our voices and our futures are very important to understand. I am also someone who was born in China and raised in New Zealand. I am an animal lover and enjoy going outside with family and friends to places where we can just connect and play together. All of these activities and experiences help me to feel grounded and allow me to thrive.
Knowing what you enjoy doing helps you to understand yourself better because you spend more time doing the things you love. Everyone has different hobbies and backgrounds, so don't judge anyone just from their habits or what they do.
You can also help other people when you know their personalities and their roots. If they look unsure or afraid of their surroundings, you can simply help them by talking or playing with them.
I feel like I belong when I'm in a safe environment with people that I know and trust. I also feel like I belong when I'm playing with friends or simply reading or drawing in the library. It is important to know when you feel like you belong so that, even if you don't belong somewhere at first, you can still help yourself find that sense of belonging.
On my first day of primary school, everything looked so different from kindergarten. I had no friends and I didn't think I belonged at all. Then one person came up to me as soon as he saw me alone, and he became my first friend.
Later in my school life, including during the COVID years, I made many friends both online and offline from many different cultures. I have friends from China, Korea, South Africa and many other places. Many of them are still my friends today, and this shows that a simple friendship can last a very long time.
Knowing your roots and who you are helps you understand yourself and where you come from. I'm from China, and my roots are in China. My parents, grandparents, cousins and ancestors all form part of those roots.
Your roots can explain many things about what you do and what you celebrate, whether it is Diwali, Chinese New Year or even Christmas. Celebrating what you and your family believe in is another way to strengthen your culture and your roots.
No matter what you celebrate or where you are from, we are all human beings living on the same planet. So make friends at festivals, talk to friendly people you meet at the supermarket, ask your family about your ancestors' history to learn about your roots, strengthen your voice and brighten your future.
